Fred Ridley is a native of Lakeland, Florida and a graduate of the University of Florida and Stetson University College of Law.
Fred has enjoyed a distinguished career in amateur golf, having won the 1975 United States Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia. He is the last U.S. Amateur Champion never to have turned professional. He competed in 15 USGA championships from 1969 to 1988, including 10 U.S. Amateurs. He also competed in three Masters Tournaments (1976-78) as well as the U.S. Open and the British Open Championship. He was a playing member of the 1976 U.S. World Amateur Team and the 1977 U.S. Walker Cup Team and was non-playing captain of the 1987 and 1989 U.S. Walker Cup Teams and the 2010 U.S. World Amateur Team.
Fred served on the USGA Executive Committee from 1994-2005 and was elected 58th president of the USGA in 2004-05. During those two years, he was co-chair of the World Amateur Golf Council (now the International Golf Federation), the organization recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the world governing body for golf. In 2006, he was the recipient of the PGA of America’s Distinguished Service Award (past winners of which include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Bob Hope and George H. W. Bush).
From 2007-2017, Fred has served as chairman of the Competition Committees for the Masters Tournament. Since 2017, he has served as Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament.
Fred is a partner in the international law firm of Foley & Lardner LLP. He is a former member of the Firm’s Management Committee and the former national chair of the firm’s real estate practice.
Fred lives in Tampa, Florida. He and his wife Betsy have three adult daughters, Maggie, Libby and Sydney.
